How to Run an AEO Audit for Your UK Business (2026)

Google AI Overviews, Bing Copilot, and ChatGPT search now answer your customers' questions directly — without sending them to a website. If your business is cited in those answers, you get authority and visibility before a single click happens. If you're not, you're invisible at the moment that matters most.

This post gives you a five-point AEO audit you can run yourself, today. No agency needed. By the end, you'll know exactly where your site stands and what to fix first.

1. What is AEO and why does it matter in 2026?

Plain English

SEO gets you into the search results. AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation — gets you into the answer. One is about position. The other is about recommendation.

Traditional SEO is about ranking — getting your page high in a list of results. That still matters. But AI search tools don't return a list. They synthesise an answer from multiple sources and present it as a single, coherent response. Nearly 60% of EU Google searches already end without a click. The user got their answer and moved on.

For UK small businesses, the stakes are real. ONS data shows UK AI adoption reached an estimated 22% of firms in 2024, up from 9% in 2023. The tools your customers use to search are changing faster than most businesses are adapting. Being cited in an AI-generated answer puts your name in front of someone with buying intent — before they've visited any results page. That traffic won't show in your traditional SEO reports.

The full distinction between SEO and AEO is covered in our post on SEO vs AEO. This post is about what you can audit and fix right now.

2. How AI search engines decide whose answer to use

Plain English

AI systems don't rank pages. They select sources they trust, extract the clearest answer they can find, and present it as their own response. Your job is to be the clearest, most trustworthy source on the page.

Five signals consistently determine whether your content gets cited or ignored. These are what your audit is measuring.

1. Directness

AI systems extract from content that answers in the first sentence. Three paragraphs of context before you reach the point means your content gets skipped. Lead with the answer, then explain it.

2. Structure

Clear H2s, short paragraphs, and Q&A formatting make your content easier to parse. A page where each heading states a question — and the paragraph beneath it opens with the answer — is far more extractable than well-written prose with no clear signposting.

3. E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Named authors with real credentials, cited sources, and a consistent track record in their subject all carry weight. Anonymous content with no attribution is at a structural disadvantage — regardless of how good the writing is.

4. Schema markup

FAQPage, HowTo, Article, and LocalBusiness schema tell machines explicitly what your content is. Rather than leaving an AI system to guess that a block of text is a question and answer, schema markup declares it outright. Pages with correct schema are meaningfully easier to extract from.

5. Freshness

On trend and time-sensitive queries, content from 2026 consistently outperforms content from 2024 — even if the older piece is better written. AI systems treat recency as a proxy for accuracy. An explicit publish date and current-year context both signal freshness in a way algorithms reward.

3. The five-point AEO audit you can run today

Work through these in order. One finding and one action per point.

1 — Are your key questions answered directly on the page?

Finding: Write down the five questions your customers ask most before buying. Now open your service pages. Are those questions present as headings, with a direct one-paragraph answer immediately below? If the answer is buried three scrolls down — or missing entirely — that's a gap AI systems will not work around.

Action: Take your most-visited service page. Add one H2 that matches your most common pre-sale question. Answer it in the first sentence. That single change is measurable and often produces results within weeks.

2 — Do you have FAQ schema on your key pages?

Finding: Right-click any service page and view source. Search for FAQPage or application/ld+json. Not there? You have no FAQ schema. For most small business sites, this is the highest-impact fix available.

Action: Add a FAQPage JSON-LD block to your top three service pages. Use the questions from step one. Google's structured data documentation shows the exact format.

3 — Do your headings match how people actually search?

Finding: Open Google Search Console and pull the top 20 queries for each service page. Now look at your H2s. If your heading says "Our Approach" and users are searching "how long does web design take", that's a mismatch. AI systems extract from headings first. A mismatch is a lost extraction.

Action: Rewrite three H2s per page to directly mirror your top-performing queries. Phrase them as questions where possible.

4 — Is your E-E-A-T visible?

Finding: Check your blog posts and service pages. Is there a named author with a photo and a bio showing real credentials? Does your About page establish the team's track record? Are real outcomes referenced anywhere? If any of these are absent, your content is missing the trust signals AI systems use to validate sources.

Action: Add author attribution to every blog post. Write a bio that mentions relevant experience — not just a job title. Link it to your About page.

5 — Is your content explicitly dated and current?

Finding: Look at your blog posts and key service pages. Is a 2026 publish or update date visible to the reader? Does the content reflect the current context? On trend queries, AI systems consistently favour fresher content — an undated page is a page that doesn't exist in time.

Action: Add a visible "Last updated" date to service pages. Review any post older than 12 months, update anything that's shifted, and refresh the date. A targeted update often outperforms a brand-new piece on the same topic.

4. What Signature Co. changed on our own site

We ran this audit on webmeisters.co.uk earlier this year. Here's what we actually changed — and what happened.

FAQ schema on service pages

We added FAQPage JSON-LD blocks to our AI Solutions, Web Design, and Cyber Security pages — none of which had structured data beyond basic Article schema. Within three weeks, Search Console showed impression growth on question-format queries, including queries we hadn't previously appeared for at all.

Heading rewrites on service pages

Several of our service page H2s were written for aesthetics. "What we do" and "Our process" communicate something to a human. They communicate nothing useful to an AI system. We rewrote them to match real query language — "What does an AI solutions agency do?" and "How long does a web design project take?" The work was unglamorous. The results were not.

Author attribution on all blog posts

Every post on this site now carries a named author, a role, and a link to the About page. No single signal transforms your E-E-A-T score overnight — but each one adds to the picture AI retrieval systems build of your site's credibility. It compounds.

Built a dedicated AEO authority page

We built the /aeo page to establish topical authority on AEO queries. A page built around a single topic — with proper schema, direct answers, and internal links to supporting content — consistently outperforms a general page that tries to cover everything.

5. How to optimise your content for AI search

Five actions, in order of impact. Start at the top and work down.

Lead every answer with the answer

AI systems extract the opening sentence of relevant paragraphs. If that sentence is context-setting or a caveat, the extraction is worthless. Audit your top five pages and rewrite the opening sentence of every major section to state the answer plainly — before anything else.

Add FAQPage schema to every service page and long-form post

FAQPage JSON-LD is the most direct signal you can give an AI system that your page contains structured, citable answers. It doesn't require a visible FAQ section. It requires a correctly formatted schema block in your page source. This post includes its own — view source if you want to see the pattern.

Rewrite H2s to mirror how customers ask questions

Pull your GSC queries for each page. Anywhere your heading language bears no resemblance to the queries generating impressions, rewrite the heading to match. That heading becomes a direct signal to both search engines and AI systems that this section answers this specific question.

Add or update author bios with real credentials

"John is a digital marketing enthusiast" tells AI systems nothing. "John has led SEO strategy for UK SMEs for nine years and spoken at Brighton SEO" is a verifiable trust signal. Update every author bio on your site to include specific, checkable information — years of experience, industries, real outcomes.

Update publish dates and refresh content at least annually

A content refresh is not a rewrite. It is a structured review: update statistics, replace outdated references, add new context where things have changed, and update the date. Do this on your highest-traffic posts every 12 months at minimum. On fast-moving topics like AI search, every six months is better.

6. Run your free AEO check

We built a free AEO checker to make the manual audit faster. Enter your URL and it flags schema gaps, heading mismatches, E-E-A-T signals, and content freshness issues — the exact things covered in this post. It takes under a minute and returns a prioritised list of what to fix first.

It won't replace a full audit on a complex site — but for most small business websites, it will surface the highest-impact gaps immediately. Start there.

7. Where to start if your audit shows gaps

This week: Add FAQPage schema to your top three service pages. No redesign required. No developer needed. A correctly formatted JSON-LD block in your page source directly signals to every major AI search platform that your content is structured and citable. It is the fastest move available.

This month: Rewrite three headings per page to match question-format queries from your GSC data. Then add author attribution to your blog posts. Neither takes more than an afternoon. Together they strengthen your E-E-A-T profile, improve your heading-to-query alignment, and make your content more extractable — three of the five signals from section two, done.

If the gaps are significant: A proper AEO audit — covering schema, content, E-E-A-T, and heading architecture across your whole site — takes time to do right, and it is worth doing right. AI is reshaping how businesses get found. The sites building their AEO foundations now will have a compounding advantage over the next two years. The ones waiting will be harder to recover.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AEO audit?

An AEO audit reviews your site's structure, schema markup, heading language, author credentials, and content freshness to identify why your pages may not be appearing in AI-generated answers. It is distinct from an SEO audit — the signals that drive AI citation are different from those that drive traditional rankings.

How do I know if my site is optimised for AI search?

Run the five-point audit in this post. Check whether key questions are answered directly on relevant pages, whether you have FAQPage schema, whether your headings match how customers search, whether your E-E-A-T signals are visible, and whether your content carries a current date. Two or more absent means your site has meaningful AEO gaps.

Is FAQPage schema worth adding to a small business website?

Yes — it is the highest-impact quick fix on most small business sites. FAQPage JSON-LD structures your question-and-answer content in a machine-readable format, making it easier for search systems to parse and extract. Google's documentation recommends it for rich result eligibility in traditional search — not as a path into AI Overviews, which are determined by content quality and authority, not markup.

How long does it take to see results from AEO changes?

Schema changes are typically processed by Google within two to four weeks. Heading rewrites aligned to high-impression queries can affect AI Overview inclusion within a similar timeframe. E-E-A-T improvements accumulate more slowly but compound over months — start them now regardless.

Does AEO replace SEO for UK small businesses?

No. AEO builds on top of SEO, not instead of it. A technically weak site with thin content and no backlinks will perform poorly in AI search for the same reasons it performs poorly in traditional search. AEO-specific changes — schema, directness, E-E-A-T — determine whether AI systems cite you once your SEO foundation is solid.
